Presbyterian Church (USA) PLENARY SESSION TO CONSIDER MEMORIAL CHURCH OVERTURE
Friends,
If you would like to watch any of the plenary sessions of the PC (USA) General Assembly, go to the following link https://ga-pcusa.org/.
In either event, our member, Maxine Richert, will provide three minutes of comment about this overture. The Race and Gender Justice Committee’s leadership sent Maxine the following invitation:
On behalf of RGJ committee moderator Willye Bryan and vice-moderator Lori Yamauchi, I would like to extend an invitation for you to speak during the RGJ plenary report. As you may have heard, all of the items of business from the committee have been placed on the consent agenda, and we will know Tuesday whether any of those items will be pulled from the consent agenda to be taken up by the entire plenary. Regardless of whether anything gets pulled from the consent agenda or not, the committee leaders would like to highlight the important issues that were part of the committee’s work and why they are important for us as a denomination. To that end, the committee leaders would like for you to speak for up to 3 minutes in the last section in which they will highlight the items related to reparative justice (07, 08, 09, 10, 12). They would like you to speak to your work related to item 09. Maxine said “yes” to speaking one more time regarding the Overture during the General Assembly.
Regardless of the outcome of the vote, this Overture has been, and will continue to be, influential as the PC(USA) continues its work to support reparative justice. We hope many of our congregation will be able to watch Maxine when she speaks live by clicking on the link https://ga-pcusa.org/, but it will also be available on video to watch later. You can find the videos by scrolling down at this link to the “GA225 Video Collection” and clicking on the arrow below “Explore the Collection”.

Overture passes committee without objection or amendment (6/23/2022)
Friends,
- Thanks to the careful, prayerful, and meticulous work of the many people involved in crafting the Overture and all the supporting information — and to the wonderful advocacy of Maxine Richert, Pastor Phil Campbell, and many others from presbyteries across the country — the Overture (RGJ-09 On Directing the Office of the General Assembly to Issue Apologies and Reparations for the Racist Closure of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, Juneau, Alaska) was passed out of the Race and Gender Justice Committee at the Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly today without objection or amendment. This includes the financial commitments proposed in the Overture ($370,000 total).
- The Overture will go on to the next step at General Assembly now.
- With a grateful and a joyous heart,
