Friends, It has been confirmed. The Overture was approved when the consent agenda was approved!

You can view Maxine Richert’s testimony:

    Maxine Richert’s testimony, July 6, 2022, GA 225 Plenary 7

  • Plenary Session of the PC (USA)
  • I hope you will still consider watching the Race and Gender Justice Committee report to the General Assembly. Maxine will be speaking to highlight the Overture. The link to watch on Wednesday July 6 at 8:00 am AK is found at the above link. You can find the videos by scrolling down at this link to the “GA225 Video Collection” and clicking on the arrow below “Explore the Collection”.  PLENARY Plenary 7, 8, & 9 July 6, 2022 Maxine Richert’s statement begins at 1:29:08. Thanks are owed to so many for their commitment and hard work in bringing the events that occurred in Juneau in 1963 forward to all the congregations of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and to reminding us all that we do not have to simply accept past wrongs; we can do something about them. Reparative justice is alive at Ḵunéix̱ Hídi Northern Light United Church, the Northwest Coast Presbytery, and in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Now we continue our work. More on that soon. Blessings and peace Myra Munson

Presbyterian Church (USA) PLENARY SESSION TO CONSIDER MEMORIAL CHURCH OVERTURE

    Friends,

If you would like to watch any of the plenary sessions of the PC (USA) General Assembly, go to the following link https://ga-pcusa.org/.

  • Plenary Session of the PC (USA)
  • The meetings are occurring from 8 am AK (noon EDT) July 5-7. The Overture regarding the racist closure of the Memorial Church has been added to a consent agenda for Plenary 7 that will be considered on Wednesday, July 6 at 8 am AK. If we understand the process correctly, if there are no requests to remove it from the consent agenda, it will pass without discussion. If it is removed from the consent agenda, there will be an opportunity for discussion prior to a vote.

In either event, our member, Maxine Richert, will provide three minutes of comment about this overture. The Race and Gender Justice Committee’s leadership sent Maxine the following invitation:

On behalf of RGJ committee moderator Willye Bryan and vice-moderator Lori Yamauchi, I would like to extend an invitation for you to speak during the RGJ plenary report. As you may have heard, all of the items of business from the committee have been placed on the consent agenda, and we will know Tuesday whether any of those items will be pulled from the consent agenda to be taken up by the entire plenary. Regardless of whether anything gets pulled from the consent agenda or not, the committee leaders would like to highlight the important issues that were part of the committee’s work and why they are important for us as a denomination. To that end, the committee leaders would like for you to speak for up to 3 minutes in the last section in which they will highlight the items related to reparative justice (07, 08, 09, 10, 12). They would like you to speak to your work related to item 09. Maxine said “yes” to speaking one more time regarding the Overture during the General Assembly.

Regardless of the outcome of the vote, this Overture has been, and will continue to be, influential as the PC(USA) continues its work to support reparative justice. We hope many of our congregation will be able to watch Maxine when she speaks live by clicking on the link https://ga-pcusa.org/, but it will also be available on video to watch later. You can find the videos by scrolling down at this link to the “GA225 Video Collection” and clicking on the arrow below “Explore the Collection”.
